New UK duty suspensions could reduce import costs

New UK duty suspensions came into force on 5 August 2026, reducing or removing Customs Duty on a range of eligible imported goods until 31 December 2028.

The suspensions cover products across a variety of sectors including food and ingredients, chemicals, polymers, textiles, automotive and manufacturing. They are available to any UK importer whose goods meet the relevant conditions, not just the businesses that originally requested them.

Businesses importing significant volumes of raw materials, components or other inputs should review their commodity codes and current duty rates to see whether they could benefit. Eligibility can depend on specific product details, including composition, dimensions, purity or intended use.

It is also worth comparing duty suspensions with preferential tariffs available through UK trade agreements, as these may provide a more beneficial rate depending on the goods and their origin.

Reviewing your commodity classifications and available tariff concessions could therefore help identify valuable savings while ensuring the correct tariff treatment is applied.
