AAK – From Past to Present

AAK’s story began more than 150 years ago, built on a long-standing heritage of expertise in plant-based oils and fats. From its early beginnings to the innovative business it is today, its journey has been shaped by people, partnerships and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Czarnikow Group officially opened the Faraday Road Mill as C.C. Spice on 9 October 1975. The opening ceremony was attended by representatives from Sainsbury’s, Runcorn Development Corporation, and the Town Mayor.  

The business was later renamed Lion Foods Limited, packing milled herbs and spices while producing a limited range of sauces at the Davy Road site.

In 2006, the wet sauce division of Lion Foods was acquired by AarhusKarlshamn (AAK), and the Runcorn site became known as AAK Foods.

The site has prospered over the 20 years since acquisition, bringing together expertise and people from across the industry and strengthening AAK’s presence in the UK.

As part of its commitment to employee development, the Runcorn site opened a new training centre in 2021.

The centre reflected AAK’s belief in investing in its people, supporting employees to develop their skills, knowledge and careers.

This month, AAK Runcorn has been recognised among the UK’s Best Workplaces in Manufacturing, Production & Transportation™ 2026.
